Belgian athlete Mathieu Bonn breaks the world record for swimming in the open sea

Belgium’s Mathieu Bonne broke the world open water swimming record by swimming 131 km in the Gulf of Corinth towards western Greece.

Bonn sailed in the Gulf of Corinth for 60 hours and 55 minutes and covered 131 km. He chose this place because he could swim over 100 km in a straight line. “My first goal is to break the current world record of 125.7 km, but if after this distance I feel good again and Poseidon favors me, I intend to swim as many more“, – he said before the start of the swim.

Mathieu Bonn started on Thursday, a day later than planned – due to strong winds and very high waves in the Gulf of Corinth. “His whole body, and especially his lips, were very sore because of the salty sea water. In addition, there was a strong wind at the end“, – said a representative of his team. “It was a tough finish, but despite his exhausted body, Mathieu kept smiling and moving forward.”they noted, according to the newspaper “Ethnos“.

The previous record was held by Neil Agius of Malta, who swam 125.7 km.
