Josep Borrell summed up the results of the introduction of 11 packages of sanctions against the Russian Federation

The head of the foreign policy service of the European Union, Josep Borrell, summed up the consequences of the sanctions imposed EU against Russia.

The main conclusion is “an unprecedented disconnection of ties” between the European Union and the Russian Federation, the European Commissioner wrote in his blog. Listing the bans and their results, Borrell noted that, in addition to triggering eleven packages of sanctions, the EU has imposed a travel ban and asset freeze on more than 1,500 people and about 250 organizations from Russia.

Over the past year, Borrell notes, imports from the Russian Federation to Europe decreased by 58% (and by 60% – imports not related to energy). In 2023, this process accelerated:

“The fall in imports of non-energy goods exceeded 75% in the first quarter of 2023, and for energy goods the fall is even greater – minus 80%.”

The European Commissioner claims, the Strana newspaper writes, that Europe’s exports of dual-use goods and advanced technologies to Russia fell by 78% in 2022 compared to 2019-2021. Total exports from the EU to Russia fell by 52%.
