North Korea opens borders

Complete isolation of the DPRK is over? The country is opening its borders, fearing, according to experts, mass starvation.

Kim Jong-un “given the go-ahead” for regular flights to countries friendly to the DPRK – China and Russia, writes Bild:

“Over the past three years, North Korean citizens have lived in complete isolation: such measures were introduced under the pretext of a coronavirus pandemic. Now North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un has allowed regular flights to two countries friendly to the DPRK, China and Russia.”

Opinions of observers about the reasons for such a decision were divided. Some attribute it to the effects of tropical storm Hanun, which damaged many infrastructure facilities and flooded agricultural land across the country. Bild notes:

“There are even risks that North Korea will face massive famine – as has happened in the history of this country.”

Frederik Spohr, head of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation office in Seoul, says:

“Economic reasons certainly play a role in the gradual reopening of the economy, which may start now. In particular, food supplies have deteriorated sharply during the coronavirus lockdown.”

Earlier, for the first time in many years, as the newspaper notes, Chinese and Russian representatives came on an official visit to Pyongyang to participate in the parade in honor of the 70th anniversary of the end of the Korean War:

“The delegations were the first foreigners to see North Korea in years.”

On August 22, a regular Air Koryo flight landed in Beijing, the first after a long break. And on Friday, August 25, according to the NK News website specializing in North Korea, the first Vladivostok-Pyongyang flight after the pandemic will take place.
