Press conference on the fire fighting fronts: “The situation in Parnit is extremely critical., the minister said. “We’ve had 355 forest fires in five days, 209 of them in the last 24 hours.”
“The situation is unprecedented”, Minister for Combating Climate Crises Vassilis Kikilias said at a briefing on the fires. The minister said it “worst summer ever to collect meteorological data”. He said that over the past five days there were 355 fires, and only in the last day – 209.
Along with the Evros fire, firefighters continue to fight 9 critical fires at this point. “The situation in Parnit is extremely critical,” said Vassilis Kikilias. “Within five minutes, the first air resources arrived at the fire.”
“Given climate change, we have significantly modernized the civil defense system. Unfortunately, the result was not what we wanted. We need to take additional steps to cope with the situation”said Kikilias.
The press conference was addressed by the head of the fire department Georgios Pournaras, the head of the order department ELAS Major General Georgios Michalopoulos, Director General for Forests and Forest Environment of the Ministry of the Environment Evangelos Guntufas and Director General for Coordination of the General Secretariat of Civil Defense Phibus Theodorou.
