Coronavirus: On average, 5 out of 8 test positive

In the country’s pharmacies, the demand for rapid tests and self-testing has grown sharply. According to data compiled by the city’s pharmaceutical association, five out of eight “vacationers” who have come home from vacation and have been tested have tested positive for covid.

“Demand increased sharply after the August 15 holiday. Tests are carried out mainly by our fellow citizens who have just returned from their summer holidays,” says Dionysios Evgenidis, president of the Pharmaceutical Association of Thessaloniki. As stated in the association’s announcement, citizens of all ages come to pharmacies to get tested and find out if they are sick with coronavirus, and an average of five out of eight tested positive.

A typical example of increased demand, according to Mr. Evgenidis, is the fact that “there are pharmacies in Thessaloniki, where recently an average of eight rapid tests per day are carried out, whereas a month ago nobody was interested. It is noted that in other pharmacies, citizens buy up to 20 self-tests per day.“. According to the experts, “there is currently enough stock to cover the increased demand for rapid- and self-tests.”

Citizens in general are reported to have mild symptoms of the disease, such as a sore throat and a runny nose. The National Health Service is advising Greeks to continue to remain vigilant and follow simple daily rules such as avoiding close contact, especially when someone shows symptoms, washing and sanitizing their hands well, and cough or sneeze into the inside of your elbow.
