Germany sharply reduced imports of Greek fruits and vegetables

In the first half of 2023, Germany imported 650,000 tons less fresh fruits and vegetables due to a sharp increase in agricultural prices.

In particular, the report of the German statistical agency SBA (Statistisches Bundesambt) states that imports of fresh fruits and vegetables to Germany continued to decline in the first half of this year. However, after falling sharply in recent years, this decline has been limited to around 3%. In quantitative terms, with a volume of 4.2 million tons, Germany in the first half of 2023 imported 650 thousand tons less fresh fruits and vegetables. This, according to Greek exporters, will lead to a decrease in imports by 1.2 million tons year-on-year in 2023.

Imports worth €7.34 billion

In value terms, the picture is different.. In the first six months of this year, Germany’s fresh fruit and vegetable imports amounted to 7.34 billion euros, up 8% on the previous two years, according to Incofruit Hellas. Thus, the average cost in the first half of 2023 was more than 10% higher than in the same period last year. Food prices, especially peppers and oranges, were significantly higher.

A record increase in prices for vegetables and fruits:

Less products, higher prices

All major fresh fruit and vegetable imports to Germany have shown a downward trend in recent years. Imports of bananas to Germany this year has become significantly smaller. Imports of cucumbers also fell in the first half of this year.

In the first half of 2023, Germany imported even fewer tomatoes. However, the fall of 4% is not as noticeable as the decline in imports of apples and oranges by 14% and 9%, respectively. Pepper imports also fell sharply, by 12%. However, for some products, imports increased, in particular, for avocados and mangoes.

“It should be noted that in monetary terms, exports from our country increased by 30% compared to the corresponding half of 2022 and by 5% compared to 2021, Georgios Polichronakis, Special Advisor to Incofruit Hellas, says, “However, in quantitative terms, the opposite is true.”

As we reported earlier, rising prices for agricultural products in Greek supermarkets in 2023 was up to 100% compared to a year earlier, while purchase prices increased by no more than 50%. However, retailers attribute the increased markup to higher electricity and fuel prices.
