Ahead of schedule: EU gas storage facilities 90% full

The EU’s gas storage facilities are already 90% full, although according to the schedule, member countries had to reach this level before November 1.

Almost three months ahead of schedule will allow the winter period of 2023-2024 to pass safely. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said quotes “EP”:

“This will help us get through the winter safely. Together we are phasing out Russian gas while continuing to work to have even more diverse sources of supplies in the future.”

Under the new gas storage targets adopted by member countries in 2022, they had to fill their storage facilities by November 1st. The Czech Republic at the end of July reported 90% occupancy. Last year, the peak filling level of storage facilities reached 95% of their capacity.

The EU plans also included a 15% reduction in gas consumption to get through the winter of 2022/2023. The efforts made have reduced demand by almost 18%, with half of the savings coming from households.

Germany this summer approved the acceleration of the construction of LNG terminals to compensate for the withdrawal of gas from Russia.
