New traffic rules: 3 tougher punishments, for which drivers face jail

The new Code of Road Traffic Rules provides for stricter penalties for drivers guilty of traffic accidents.

New provisions of the Criminal Code (Ποινικού Κώδικα) aim to improve the safety of the road network. Penalties for offenses are getting tougher and can even lead to imprisonment. In particular, in accordance with the amendment to article 290 “Dangerous driving” of the Criminal Code, punishments for offenders will begin with imprisonment for up to 3 years and go up to life imprisonment in the event of a large number of deaths.

What penalties have been increased?

1. Driving on a motorway (including expressways) at 60 km/h or more than the speed limit (30 km/h or more for a bus or truck).
2. Driving in a residential area or other network at a speed of 40 km/h or more in excess of the established speed limit (20 km/h or more for a bus or truck).
3. Driving in a dedicated bus lane (LEA), except in certain cases: in emergency vehicles (EKAB, fire brigade, etc.) or in the event of an emergency (such as an accident).

   Punishment for offenses:

• Imprisonment up to 3 years if there is a danger to road users.
• Imprisonment for at least one year: danger to the life of 1 person.
• Imprisonment up to 10 years if the driver’s actions resulted in grievous bodily injury or significant damage to public facilities.
• Imprisonment for at least 10 years if the death of a person has occurred.
• Up to life imprisonment if the cause of death was a large number of people.

Driving under the influence of alcohol

When it comes to drunk driving, the offending driver does not have to be involved in a traffic accident or accident. According to the traffic rules, if the concentration of alcohol in the driver’s blood is more than 1.10 g / l when measured by the method of blood sampling or more than 0.60 milligrams per liter of exhaled air (when measured with an appropriate breathalyzer) shall be sentenced to imprisonment for a term of not less than 2 months.

If within 2 years after the previous offense it is established that the driver again drove a vehicle while intoxicated, and the concentration of alcohol exceeds 0.60 milligrams per liter of exhaled air, then for each subsequent offense a imprisonment for at least 6 months.
