Unthinkable: 6,000 incidents of domestic violence in the first half of 2023

“No woman should endure violence at the hands of her abuser and be afraid to report problems in the family,” says Constantina Dimoglidu, spokesperson for the press service ΕΛΑΣ.

As Ms. Dimoglidou stated, when a woman complains about domestic violence she is subjected to, “she is fully informed about the well-organized network of support structures for women established under the new Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family (in particular the General Secretariat for Equality and Human Rights person) where they are provided with housing and psychosocial support”.

“In the first half of 2023, the number of reported cases of domestic violence reached 6,000,” she says. An important tool in the hands of women will also be the Panic Button: an intelligent mobile application that saves women’s lives.

Sophia Vagena, ΕΛΑΣ Police Officer, President of Police Rights and Equality of POASY, also spoke on a TV program on the ERT channel. More than 6,000 complaints of domestic violence have been filed in six months, she said, but “there is also a huge amount of abuse against women, and these are cases where the information never reaches the authorities.”

As the expert emphasized, “at the first sign that you have become a victim of mental or physical / sexual abuse, immediately write a statement, contact the police before things get worse.” The 18 departments of the Greek police came to the conclusion that, given the scale that the phenomenon of domestic violence has acquired, they are not enough and replenishment of the staff is required.

“Women who have been abused do not realize that the one who will interrupt the thread of their lives is the one who has the key to their house,” the police officer concluded.
