TASS: Russia will begin to provide consular services in the occupied territory of Northern Cyprus

The Russian Embassy in Cyprus will soon begin providing consular services “in the northern part of the island”, according to the Telegram of the Russian state news agency TASS.

The Russian Embassy in Cyprus will soon begin providing consular services in the northern part of the island occupied by Turkey in 1974. This was reported to a TASS correspondent by a representative of the embassy.

“We will start providing consular services in the northern part of the city of Nicosia in the very near future. The work will be carried out on a regular basis,” the source said.

As the representative of the embassy noted, we are talking about the fulfillment by the Russian authorities of obligations to their citizens living in the north of Cyprus. He drew attention to the fact that several countries, including the United States, Great Britain, Germany, Italy and France, have had their own diplomatic missions dealing with consular issues in northern Cyprus for many years.

According to some estimates given by TASS, more than 50,000 Russian citizens currently live in the occupied territories. Touching upon Russia’s position on the Cyprus problem, the Russian ambassador noted that it had not changed. Russia “continues to adhere to a position of principle, consistently advocating a comprehensive, viable and fair settlement within the well-known international legal framework enshrined in [соответствующих] UN Security Council resolutions,” Zyazyukov said.

Ertugruloglu: “The opening of the Russian representative office in the occupied territories is not recognition”

Russia will open a representative office in the occupied territories to provide consular services to Russian citizens, said the “supreme ruler” of Northern Cyprus, Tahsin Ertugruloglu, commenting on reports in the Turkish press that “Russia is opening a consulate.”

As Tahsin Ertugruloglu said in an interview with TRT Haber, “This issue has existed for a year now. Russia wants to open an office and provide consular services to Russian citizens. It should not be understood that Russia has recognized TDVK,” he said, referring to a pseudo-state.
