Kavala: Bulgarian arrested for insulting Greek national symbols

In Kavala, a Bulgarian citizen raised the Bulgarian flag instead of the Greek one and shouted that these areas belonged to his country.

According to the Central Port Authority of Kavala and the testimony of witnesses, the 35-year-old Bulgarian lowered the Greek flag on the berth of the passenger port of Apostolos Pavlos on the night of Friday, August 4 and hoisted the Bulgarian one in its place.

After receiving a report of the incident, the port authorities tried to arrest the man. However, he actively resisted, insulted the port guards and shouted that these areas belonged to Bulgaria.

This is not the first such case when a man commits illegal acts. He is a member of an extremist organization advocating that Kavala and the regions of eastern Macedonia belong not to Greece, but to a neighboring country.

The man was taken to the prosecutor’s office of the first instance in Kavala, where he was charged with insulting national symbols. Then he was released writes CNN Greece.

But that’s not the end of the story at all. The man unsuccessfully tried to escape from Greece. Despite the fact that the Coast Guard had previously removed the license plates from his car, he got into it and headed towards Drama. There he met a police post, which signaled him to stop. However, the man developed speed, as a result of which a chase was started for him, which reached the border with Bulgaria.

The Greek police passed on the information about the persecution to all local authorities, and a corresponding signal was also sent to Bulgaria. The man drove safely through the countryside there, but then he was stopped by the police, already on the territory of Bulgaria. According to the information, he has been handed over to the Greek authorities and is being held in Drama on new charges that will be added to the list already filed.

In response to an APE-MPE question, the Bulgarian embassy characterizes the behavior of its citizen as “illegal” and deplorable, completely contrary to the excellent good neighborly relations between Bulgaria and Greece as two members of the European Union.
