6 Foods You Shouldn’t Eat Before Swimming


No matter how the sea stimulates the appetite, it is important to follow the rules in order to preserve your life and health on vacation.

It is a fact that when we are going to the beach, we take something to eat with us. But did you know that “snacking” can cost you your life? So we all know that Swimming on a full stomach is prohibited and usually 3-4 hours must pass since the last meal, otherwise there is a serious risk of drowning. And that’s because during these 4 hours during digestion, body temperature rises.

Entering the sea after sitting even a few minutes in the sun, there is the first serious risk of heat shock due to the temperature difference of the body in contact with the water (however warm it may be).

In addition to the above rule, there is certain foods that are important to avoid before diving into the sea or pool.

1. Legumes

Legumes in general, but especially beans and lentils (but also peas) are foods rich in plant fiber, which is very good for health, but not when we are going to swim. They can cause bloating, cramps, and severe discomfort, so it’s best to avoid them if you’re going to the sea.

2. Hot food

Hot food can cause gastrointestinal problems. When swimming in a prone position, there is a high risk of developing gastroesophageal reflux (belching with the release of acid from the stomach, etc.). If you are in the water, and when this happens to you, you must remain calm and try to get out of the water with calm, smooth movements.

3. Coffee

Most of us combine relaxation in a sun lounger with a cup of delicious iced coffee. Unfortunately, coffee is a very risky option because caffeine can give us energy, but whether it’s in coffee or energy drinks, it can cause dehydration and sometimes diarrhea or nausea.

4. Pancakes-ice cream-soft drinks

In general, it is not recommended to eat foods high in fat before swimming, as these are foods that can cause indigestion and very often cause very unpleasant sensations. Opt for lighter sorbets (juice with ice and frozen berries and fruit) or low-calorie meals. Besides say no to carbonated drinksas they can cause bloating and cramps.

5. Celery

Celery can cause a reaction that makes human skin extremely sensitive to UV radiation. Exposure to the sun after eating celery can lead to blistering and burning of the skin, so do not eat anything with celery at least a day before going to the beach.

6. Alcohol

While beach bars are associated with fun and booze, and a beer or a summer cocktail might be the logical thing to have on a hot day at sea, alcohol, even in small amounts (and lower degrees), can lead to dehydration, and also turn you into a “hero who is knee-deep in the sea.” And it’s not far from disaster.

Experts recommend avoiding alcohol not only to avoid the risk of drowning, but also to avoid serious accidents if a person engages in water sports or drives water vehicles.
