What to do if you feel unwell during a heat wave

Pulmonologist Stelios Loukidis gives advice on self-protection in extremely high temperatures.

Greece is “hot” and the president of the Hellenic Lung Society strongly advises against unimportant trips, even in the evening hours, to protect your body from abnormal heat:

“People with chronic diseases and especially those with chronic cardiopulmonary diseases are quite aware and aware of the protection measures, which boil down to the following: no unnecessary movements, stay in air-conditioned rooms, contact your doctor if they feel something. And fourth, what is very important is that in many cases, in addition to being well hydrated and careful eating, it may be necessary to modify some of the medications that the patient is taking – these may be medications that cause fluid loss. Therefore, modification of these medications may be required these days, and this always plays a role in the collaboration between doctor and patient.”

But defenseless against the aggression of nature are people who are healthy in all respects, who are forced to be exposed to high temperatures either because of their work or because they have to move, the doctor warns:

“The state has taken a number of measures – both on remote work and on providing vacations, and this is an important part. But on the other hand, good hydration, trying to avoid exposure to high temperatures at certain times and, of course, the possibility of flexible working hours can protect them from any But if we want to focus mainly on patients with chronic diseases, then I think they are quite aware and have already taken advantage of the instructions, avoid independent movements and, of course, are in air-conditioned rooms.

What to do if you experience discomfort in the heat? Mr. Loukidis advises, quotes his edition newsbeast.gr:

“I think the main recommendation is not to make unnecessary trips. There is no reason to go for a walk even at 8 pm. We must comply with this. If a person feels symptoms of heat stroke, then they depend on several factors. They may be related with his underlying disease, or may be due solely to exposure to high temperature. Therefore, it is necessary to immediately go to a cool place and try to assess how heat stroke affects the body.Is it a fever, exposure to it, or something from the underlying disease? Very important always communicate with the doctor, because with the right instructions and the right approach, you can quickly find out exactly what is happening. But everyone should know that extra trips, even at night when we think that the temperature has dropped, is something that should not be done, especially for chronic the sick and the elderly.”
