Le Figaro: Alonissos – the “temple” of diving

The French newspaper Le Figaro published an impressively colorful article paying homage to Alonissos, praising the site’s underwater wealth and natural marine park.

The Greek island of Alonissos, together with its uninhabited satellite islands, is unique marine ecosystem in the Aegean with hundreds of species of fish, birds, reptiles and mammals living harmoniously in a 2200 km2 “hexagon”.

The article strongly recommends a mandatory visit to the ancient sea route passing near the island of Peristera, at the bottom of which the remains of ancient (or medieval Byzantine period) sunken ships lie.

Giura resembles the mythical country of terrible cyclops, Psatura presents an amazing contrast of rock and white sand, Kira Panagia is a mountain range that “hides” the Byzantine monastery and the marble rocks of Skandzur, entwined with dense green vegetation (juniper). In addition, the bird market is impressive, a favorite habitat for gulls and hawks.

Divers can explore the oldest merchant ship that ran aground in the 5th century BC near Peristera, at a depth of almost 30 meters. Until now, more than 3,000 antique amphorae rest at the bottom of the sea.

In addition to diving and paradise beaches, the island has picturesque settlements, beautiful fishing villages, where friendly staff will offer you unrivaled local cuisine.

There are also many hiking trails and a festival of traditional dances, which gives a special, authentic flavor to the island.

“Alonissos is evolving into an international destination for active recreation and wellness. The dynamics of the destination is enhanced by new projects, services and original thematic tourism “products” that we develop every year, taking into account the financial possibilities of Greek and foreign guests who want a quality, relaxed and positive holiday,” said Mayor Fr. Alonissos Petros Vafinis.
