Crete: worker with 2nd degree burns placed… in refrigerator with meat

A hotel worker in Crete suffered severe burns from hot oil spilled on him. However, he was refused by managers to call an ambulance.

As a “treatment,” they placed the shocked victim… in a meat freezer. He tells, quotes newsbeast.gr:

“I have unbearable pain in my arms and face. They put me in a meat freezer.”

About the incident, the man says that the cause of the burns was hot oil, the pan with which he carried in his hands. At some point, it spilled on the face and hands, causing severe burns.

The managers “promptly solved the problem”: they took him to a cold room with meat instead of taking him to the hospital and flatly refused to call an ambulance. However, they gave the victim a few days off, while, allegedly, having received from “their doctor” recommendations on the ointments that should be used. The man says:

“I have unbearable pain on my hands and on my face. Sometimes at night when I sleep, it is very strong, we are not talking about boiling water, but about hot oil.”

His mother is outraged:

“My child, when he got burns, screamed for help, to be taken to the hospital. The officials replied that we would take care of him and took him to a room with a low temperature and raw meat.”

The 22-year-old, fresh out of school, was working as a chef assistant at a hotel in the Malia area in the municipality of Hersonissos from June 10 until noon on Tuesday June 20 when the incident occurred. However, as often happens in Greece, he was not formally hired by the hotel managers and he worked uninsured.

On Thursday morning, his mother and colleagues asked for an explanation from those in charge of accommodation in Malia. The Labor Inspectorate and EFKA have already been informed, but the hotel has not yet made a statement. The young man is under the supervision of doctors from the PAGNI burn department. The family intends to seek litigation.
