Some of the editors of the famous German newspaper Bild will be replaced by artificial intelligence. True, it is not yet known exactly how many people holding editorial positions are planning to fire the largest German publication.
However, their number will be significant. How writes The Guardian, referring to a letter from publisher Bild to employees, is talking about “hundreds of cuts.” The publication plans by such actions to reduce its costs by 100 million euros. The list of employees being laid off to be replaced by AI includes “editors, print production staff, sub-editors, proofreaders and photo editors.” The publisher’s letter says:
“Unfortunately, we will have to part ways with colleagues who have tasks that in the digital world can be performed by artificial intelligence and / or automated processes.”
Matthias Depfner, CEO of newspaper owner Axel Springer SE, said in February this year that the media company must go “purely digital” and that artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT could “make independent journalism better than it was.”
He also suggested that artificial intelligence will soon become “a better aggregator of information than humans”, and in the future there will be only publishers who can create “better original content”, such as investigative journalism publications.
