Two more bodies found in Pylos shipwreck

The bodies of two more migrants were discovered by the Greek Coast Guard on Monday, near the site where a fishing seiner full of migrants capsized last week, raising the death toll to 80.

Two bodies were transported to the port city of Kalamata, where 104 survivors received emergency humanitarian and medical assistance, after which 71 of them were transferred to a special facility in Malakassa, in northern Attica, last Friday.

On Monday, search operations continued with a Navy frigate and three other ships, assisted by a Coast Guard helicopter and one of the aircraft.

A fishing boat capsized in international waters last Wednesday, 47 nautical miles from Pylos, southwestern Peloponnese. The media claimed that there were probably up to 700 people on the overcrowded ship, with women and children believed to be in the hold. However, only 80 people have been found so far.

It is assumed that many of the missing were inside the ship, which quickly sank to the bottom. At the same time, only men or strong teenagers were saved, and the women and children who were in the cabins and the hold went to the bottom along with the trawler.

As we reported earlier, court officials seized from Coast Guard ship 920 (Λιμενικού Σώματος 920) “Υποκελευστής Α’ ΛΣ ΜΟΥΡΜΟΥΡΗΣ Γρηγόριο ς” video recordings, as well as audio recordings of conversations and five important pages of the logbook, located on the bridge of the patrol boat, which was nearby with a fishing boat in distress near Pylos, and on June 15 handed over to the judicial authorities. This material is expected to shed light on the circumstances of the tragic shipwreck with dozens dead and about 550 missing. in.gr.

The Greek publication also drew attention to the fact that coast guard officers had previously told the media that “no footage of the dramatic incident was taken from the coast guard boat, because “there was no one left in the rescue operation to film what was happening.” Coast Guard officers noted that “this state-of-the-art vessel is equipped with Israeli-made electronics and sensors, as well as a camera – as shown in the photographs of this patrol boat – on a mast above the bridge.”

The same applies to other vessels that were delivered three years ago bcoast guardwhere there is a clear indication that they are equipped with a recording camera, a thermal imager, etc. The visual material should help establish what the approach of the Coast Guard ship to the fatal fishing vessel was, and what happened during those critical hours.

Moreover, there is a possibility that, despite the fact that it was midnight and complete darkness, a picture could be obtained – perhaps with the help of ship searchlights – of capsizing a fishing vessel, trapping hundreds of people, rescue, etc. https://rua.gr/news/sobmn/55981-video-s-kamery-korablya-beregovoj-okhrany-mogut-prolit-svet-na-krusheniya-v-pilosa.html
