The Russian military rescued 68 migrants from the sinking sailing ship Avalon, which was sailing from Turkey “under the flags of Germany and Greece,” according to the press service of the Russian Defense Ministry.
“The crews of the frigate “Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov” of the Northern Fleet rescued the passengers of the sinking sailboat “Avalon” in the Mediterranean Sea”, the press service of the Russian Defense Ministry reported on Telegram. According to the agency, the ship sailed under the flags of Germany and Greece, in total 68 people were rescued. They were evacuated aboard the cargo ship Pizhma.
The department clarified that the operation to rescue the passengers of the ship was successful. Later, people were taken to the bay of the island of Kalymnos for subsequent transfer on board the boats of the Greek coast guard.
The Greek media also reported on the rescue operation without mentioning the Russian warships:“According to the Coast Guard, there were 68 migrants and refugees on board the sailboat, and the Coast Guard and Navy intervened to rescue them.”according to the publication in.gr.
TV channel “MEGA” gave a blurry photo of the Russian frigate “Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov”, also not mentioning the Russian military.
Commentators from social networks caustically remarked that: “Then it can be presented in the press even worse: the Russian military delivers illegal migrants to Greece against their will, their fate is unknown / a foregone conclusion.”
The incident at Kalymnos took place a few days after tragedy at Pylosand on June 16, another boat was seen in the same area with 60 migrants and refugees who continued on their way to Italy, fortunately without problems.
