WHO declares end of COVID-19 pandemic

World Health Organization WHO officially announced about the end of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemicas a global health emergency.

The WHO said the COVID-19 pandemic has killed “at least 20 million” people. The decision was made at a meeting of committee members on Thursday, May 4, 2023.

During the deliberative meeting, the members of the Committee noted the downward trend in mortality from COVID-19, the decrease in the number of hospitalizations associated with COVID-19 and admissions to intensive care units, as well as the high level of population immunity to SARS-CoV-2.

The position of the Committee has changed over the past few months. Recognizing the remaining uncertainties associated with the potential evolution of SARS-CoV-2, they reported that the time has come to move to long-term management of the COVID-19 pandemic for the management of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The WHO Director-General concurs with the Committee’s recommendation regarding the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It determines that COVID-19 is now an established and ongoing health problem that no longer constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

The Director-General of WHO reviewed the Committee’s recommendations regarding the proposed Interim Recommendations and issued them in accordance with the statement below. WHO Director-General will convene IHR Review Committee(IHR Review Committee) to make recommendations on standing recommendations for the long-term management of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, taking into account the Strategic COVID-19 Preparedness and Response Plan 2023-2025. During this transition, States Parties are encouraged to continue to follow the Temporary Recommendations issued. The Director General expressed his sincere gratitude to the Chairman, members and advisers of the Committee for their participation and advice over the past three years.
