Man’s body found on Mount Athos

The body of a man in an advanced stage of decomposition was found on Tuesday night (02.05) in the Provat area on Mount Athos.

According to police, the body is most likely that of a 60-year-old monk who went missing on April 3 while leaving the cell of St. Artemius in Provat (Athos). The police and fire department, as well as volunteer rescuers from ΟΦΚΑΘ, were mobilized to search for him, but the search was unsuccessful.

According to grtimes.gr, the place where the man was allegedly found is not far from the place of investigation, and the likelihood that this is a 60-year-old monk is supported by the fact that the deceased was wearing a cassock.

Mount Athos: how the body was found
The body of a man was found in the location of Provat and, in fact, not far from Ιερό Κελί του Αγίου Αρτεμίου, where the monk, who had been missing since the beginning of April, lived. The ΟΦΚΑΘ rescue team, led by its commander Christos Rammos, participated in the investigation.

Christos Rammos told grtimes.gr: “The monk lived in the cell of St. Artemia, located in the Provat area, between Karion and the Holy Monastery of the Great Lavra, which is part of the Holy Monastery of Philotheos. It was Monday morning when he left the cell and never returned to it. At noon on the same day, two other monks reported his disappearance to Karion police station.”

Referring to the progress of the investigations, which have been ongoing for a month now, Mr. Rammos stressed, among other things, that “in addition to the rescue dogs, foot teams were used. In the evening hours, a drone and a thermal imager were also used. In a hard-to-reach place, the body of the missing was found by a search dog.
