This year will break all past records in the field of tourism

Turnover in tourist accommodation, restaurants and other catering businesses increased significantly in the first half of 2023, supported by a recovery in inbound tourism traffic and domestic demand.

The country’s tourism facilities continued their upward trend in just one month outside the peak period. There has been an increase in the number of newly opened hotels and tourist accommodation units. This shows that, in addition to some other issues facing the sector, tourism enterprises finally emerge from the cycle of the crisis caused by the pandemic.

At the same time, the activities of restaurants and other catering establishments were mainly strengthened by the domestic tourism market, which is a particularly positive development in anticipation of the start of the summer season.

According to data published by the Hellenic Statistical Office, for businesses in the accommodation and catering services sectors, with an obligation to keep duplicate books of accounts, for which data is available on a monthly basis, the turnover in February, for example, was 233.9 million euros, an increase of 22 .9% more than in February 2022, when it rose to 190.4 million euros.

As for the regional offices, whose share in the total turnover in 2022 exceeds 1%, the largest increase in turnover in February this year compared to February 2022 was observed in the Messinia regional office (49.1%), and the smallest increase (8.7% ) is fixed in the regional unit o. Kos, while some decrease was observed in the regional unit about. Mykonos (26.3%).

The turnover of the accommodation sector companies, which are obliged to store duplicate books, amounted to 90.46 million euros in February, an increase of 27% compared to the same month last year, when it reached 71.2 million euros. Accordingly, for catering companies with an obligation to keep duplicate books, the turnover in February 2023 was 143.46 million euros, an increase of 20.4% compared to the same month in 2022, when it was 119.17 million euros . Euro.

The data is for February to show how the “lowest season” figures have increased. And data on how the tourism sector improved and strengthened in April (Easter) and May’s three-day weekend suggests that this year will break records set in the past, before the pandemic.
