Greece: 26 parties apply for participation in the elections

The participation of parties in this year’s national elections, which will be held on May 21, 2023, will probably exceed all previous precedents!

This was emphasized by sources in the prosecutor’s office of the Supreme Court, where today by noon already 26 parties filed their applications, while in previous years this number was the highest for parties participating in parliamentary elections. The same sources stressed that applications from other candidate parties are also expected, as the deadline for applications is tomorrow at 12 noon. Until May 2, they also have to submit a list of candidates, and on May 5 it will be decided which parties will participate and which will not.

It should be noted that, for the first time, candidates, and not just party leaders, will also be scrutinized under the two amendments to ensure that their nomination is in line with the new legislation. Today, the relevant offices of the Supreme Court, where applications for nomination of candidates from parties are submitted, will work until 20:00.

Greek National Party “Hellenes”founded by Ilias Kasidiaris, has already announced its candidacy for participation in the upcoming elections.

At the same time, as Ioanna Mandru said earlier, speaking on the news of the SKAI TV channel, Honorary Deputy Prosecutor of the Supreme Court Anastasios Kanellopoulos will head the EAN party participating in the elections.

Next week a meeting of the political chamber A1 of the Supreme Court is expected, which will decide, which parties meet the criteria of the lawto field their candidates in the 2023 national elections.

Such a high number of parties that put up their candidates in the elections usually means that one of the leaders, most likely the ruling party, is playing a political game, consisting in the fact that, after the first round of elections, the electorate of these parties, which, no doubt, will not receive the required 3%, passed to them. This technique is not new and was invented many years ago. Its main feature is the use of an administrative resource.
