Hurriyet: "Mitsotakis government did not send military and politicians to the islands for Easter – Athens withdraws from the eastern Aegean"

Turkish media noted that Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis made two important steps towards Turkey in the context of new relations being built after the earthquakes in the neighboring country.

According to a report in the Hürriyet newspaper, firstly, the Greek government took measures to stop the training of terrorists in Lavrio, and secondly, it banned officials and the military from visiting the border islands with civilian status, of which, according to the Turks, there are 23.

These are practically all the islands of the eastern part of the Aegean Sea and the Dodecanese, which were included in the state on the basis of the Lausanne and Paris treaties, namely Lemnos, Samothrace, Samothrace, Mytilene, Chios, Samos, Ikaria and the mentioned Dodecanese.

The Turkish publication also mentions the Greek media that protested about this situation, but there were few of them, as most of them defiantly ignored the issue. This is stated in a Turkish publication: “Greek politicians and military leaders have canceled this year’s Easter visits to civilian islands in the Aegean. Some Greek media outlets were outraged that visits that Turkey had opposed in the past could not take place this year.”

While the question “Are we leaving our islands?” appeared in news reports, observers claimed that the government accepted Turkey’s claims, taking a step forward. The mutual solidarity shown after the strong earthquake in Turkey and the railway accident in Greece restored the bridge of dialogue between Ankara and Athens. As the ice between the two countries gradually thawed, remarkable steps followed one after the other.

In early April, the Athens administration decided to close the camp near the town of Lavrio, which was established in 1985 for refugees, but until now (according to the Turkish authorities) hundreds of PKK terrorists were kept there. Following this decision almost 40 years later, the Athenian administration took another noteworthy step, but the Greek media does not seem to be enthusiastic about this step… Greek politicians and military did not make their annual Easter visit to the islands of the Aegean this year in civilian status.

What a pity. What situation are we in? Although Greece does not renounce heavy weapons and military activities that violate the non-military and disarmament status of the 23 islands, we are glad that the Greek military and politicians do not travel to the islands for Easter celebrations.

This Easter, the leaders of the Armed Forces did not travel to the uninhabited islands. Unprecedented fact. Apparently (this was done) by the decision of Mitsotakis, so as not to disturb … the Turks.

Earlier, we reported that Greece withdrew military equipment from the border islands to transfer it to Ukraine, which was exactly what the Turkish side demanded. This and other largely unilateral decisions allowed Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to announce a dramatic improvement in relations between Greece and Turkey.
