SEP: One of the largest container ships in the world arrives in Piraeus

On April 17, 2023, Piraeus welcomed OOCL SPAIN – one of the largest ships in the world and the first ship of its size to enter Greece, which will now be a regular part of this container ship’s routes.

The vessel “OOCL SPAIN”, owned by Orient Overseas Container Line Europe, a member of the COSCO SHIPPING group, entered its maiden voyage in March this year on a circular route connecting Asia and Europe.

Why Piraeus
During its maiden voyage, which will last 84 days, OOCL SPAIN will call at 13 different ports, from China and Southeast Asia to Northwest Europe. The choice of Piraeus as an intermediate port of call is primarily due to the high level of services provided by SEP SA in terms of the speed of processing ships and transit cargoes, the technological excellence of the services offered, as well as the strategic location of Piraeus, which makes it a key hub for maritime cargo flows to/from South East Asia and many other parts of the world.

The vessel “OOCL SPAIN”, 399.9 m long and 61.3 m wide, built in 2023, has a carrying capacity of 24,188 TEUs. The use of the latest intelligent technologies on board improves its performance, allowing for improved fuel efficiency and long-term navigational safety.

About SEP:
Piraeus Container Terminal Piraeus Monopoly SA is a company registered in Greece, a wholly owned subsidiary of COSCO SHIPPING Ports Limited (a leading container terminal operator, ranked third in the world). On October 1, 2009, SEP SA took over the implementation of the concession contract for berths II and III for 35 years, which, after an international tender, PPA SA concluded with COSCO Pacific Limited (now COSCO SHIPPING Ports Limited), to which the tender was transferred. The main activity of SEP SA is the provision of loading / unloading and storage services for import and export containers passing through the port of Piraeus, including cargo using Piraeus only as an intermediate transshipment point (transit cargo). The strategic location of Piraeus makes it an ideal hub port for destinations in the Central and Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea.
