Mutzuris is back: routes from Good Friday to Easter Monday

The most interesting landmark of the city of Volos, the old steam locomotive, known as “Mutzuris”, will once again take to the route in order to please all those who decide to ride it.

Hellenic Train informs passengers that on Friday, Saturday and Easter Monday tourist trains Pelion Train 3800 and 3801 will run on the Ano Lechonia-Mileon route and back. Train 3800 will depart from Ano Lechonia at 10:00 and train 3801 will depart from Mileon at 15:00.

A one-way ticket costs 10 euros, with a return route 18 euros. A child ticket costs €6 and €10, respectively, and is valid for children between the ages of 4 and 12.

The train ran regularly on the railway, the construction of which began in 1892. It is known that the first part of the railway line (to Lechonia) was opened in 1896. The rest – up to Mileon – was laid later and put into operation in 1903. The construction of the railway line was led by Evaristo De Chirico, father of the famous artist Giorgio de Chirico, a native of Volos.

This is one of the narrowest railway lines in the world (60 cm). The train has 4 cars. He received the nickname “Μουτζούρη” (messy) because more than a century ago he functioned on coal and, when passing, left a column of thick smoke.

From Ano Lechonia to Mileon, the route passes through the mountains, crossing green slopes covered with dense vegetation.

The only stop (only 15 minutes) the train makes in Ano Gatzea to continue on its way to Mileon. The route with a total length of 15 kilometers is carried out in 90 minutes.
