Tourism: how foreigners spend money in Greece

Greece from year to year becomes one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.

Hotels with an all-inclusive system (or without it) are chosen by more than six out of ten tourists to stay in our country. Although in recent years, short-term rental has become a habit of tourists visiting Greece. Hotel accommodation is chosen by 62.5%, and short-term rental accommodation (such as Airbnb) is chosen by 19.9%.

The majority (52.8%) of tourists have an income of between 15,000 and 50,000 euros and spend just over 200 euros per person per day, with only 15% of this spending on food and shopping in retail establishments.

Americans are considered more “generous” with a daily spending of 232 euros, while Italians are more moderate in spending, with 166 euros per day. The highest spending on purchases is recorded in Crete – 26 euros per capita per day, while Americans have the strongest consumer impulse – 21 euros per day per person.

Most visitors to our country stay for more than four days, with 56% staying for 4 to 7 days and 32.7% for more than a week.

These figures are from a recent study by the Small Business Institute of the Hellenic Confederation of Trade and Enterprise (INEMY – ESEE).

93% of Germans and Italians are more satisfied than other foreigners with the variety of products they find in Greece, while Americans are less satisfied (83.5%).
