The other side of Airbnb: hidden cameras and a flurry of complaints from disgruntled customers

Airbnb’s reputation was once again dealt a major blow yesterday, as discussed at the April board meeting following a US site posting facts and detailed references to “unpleasant guest experiences.”

Users of the most popular short-term rental platform report, among other things, about the presence of hidden cameras in the bedrooms and bathrooms in the apartments they stayed in, about the cancellation of the reservation (refusal) at the last minute, as well as cases of sudden cleaning of the premises (penetration into the personal territory of technical personnel at an odd hour). In its publication, thebearcave.substack.com website mentions a large number of complaints from platform customers.

After the publication of the company’s shares on Wall Street, they registered a fall of -4.90%. The downtrend recorded in April continues (-11.82).

Owners with a large number of properties “turned away” from Airbnb, by creating their own booking platforms where they offer cheaper accommodation prices. The company said earlier that they are yet to see a drop in demand (on the back of a global downturn in the economy).

The Bear Cave report notes that an increase in non-Airbnb properties will increase competition and potentially further jeopardize revenue. However, some analysts are more optimistic about Airbnb’s prospects.

The company is currently cutting operating costs by laying off staff to maintain its profits. Airbnb’s revenue in 2022 is up 40% from last year (which was the most profitable in the company’s history).

San Francisco-based Airbnb reported a 16% increase in active listings in the fourth quarter of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021. The number of bookings increased by 20% compared to last year.
