Bear caught in illegal hunting trap released

After an operation organized by conservationists in the village of Laimos in the municipality of Prespes, a wild animal was released from a trap.

A bear aged 1.5-2 years and weighing 45 kg fell into a wire loop – an illegal trap for wild boars set up in the coastal zone between Mikri and Megali Prespa. A plowing farmer spotted the unfortunate animal on Sunday morning and notified the Wildlife Society.

On Sunday afternoon, the Florina Forest Department’s Immediate Response Team was assembled, which is responsible for addressing incidents of bears or other wildlife approaching residential areas.

Employees of the Florina Forest Guard, the Prespes Wildlife Society and the Callisto organization arrived at the scene. Specialists euthanized the wild animal so that it could be safely released. The operation to unravel the noose and release the she-bear lasted almost 3 hours.

As noted, the female bear was not injured. Despite being trapped for several hours, the animal was in quite good health and no special treatment was estimated to be required. So, waking up, the bear hurried towards the forest. And … “was like that”!
