Cyclone “ILINA” was in full swing in the southern Peloponnese. The main characteristic of weather disasters are heavy rains and storms.
This morning, in the Messinia and Laconia regions, the reporter’s camera “spotted” a rare phenomenon – clouds that usually appear in areas of America and are known as “mammatus” clouds. As amateur meteorologist Kostas Menounos (kalamata.meteoclub.gr) told ERT, such clouds are rare in Greece. The name of the clouds comes from the Latin word “mamma” meaning “breast” (“μαστός” ή “στήθος”). Usually, when they appear, they portend a strong storm and even a tornado. If their color is greenish, then hail is expected.
Skywalkers can also transform into other types, such as stratocumulus, altocumulus, or altocumulus. However, then everything goes without rain and cataclysms.
