EU to ban flavorings for heated tobacco products

The Ministry of Social Affairs has sent for approval amendments to the Tobacco Law, which adopt the requirements of the European Commission directive on the composition, labeling and packaging of heated tobacco products.

How informs BB.LV, from October 23, 2023 throughout the territory EU the use of flavorings in heated tobacco products will be banned to protect children and young people. Aiwe Telling, head of the department for environmental protection and chemical safety at the Ministry of Social Affairs, said:

“The ban on flavorings will be implemented throughout the EU. This is to protect children and young people, who are particularly attracted to flavored products, which encourages them to start using tobacco products. The European Union is taking active steps towards banning flavorings for more and more tobacco products “.

When the directive enters into force, it will automatically remove the current exemption for heated tobacco products, which will be subject to the same requirements as regular cigarettes, including a ban on flavors and labeling requirements. The decision was prompted by the rise in sales of heated tobacco products in several EU member states, jeopardizing the achievement of public health goals under the Tobacco Directive.

Heated tobacco products allow tobacco to be consumed by heating. The consumption of a heated tobacco product is also considered smoking. The amendment to the law clarifies that the capacity of an e-cigarette, including the volume of a single-use container, a single-use refill pod or an empty refill pod, cannot exceed 2 ml, since e-cigarettes with large volumes of containers can cause nicotine intoxication.
