Electricity: changes to bill subsidies

Kostas Skrekas, Minister of the Environment and Energy, announced two important changes to the system for providing subsidies for paying electricity bills.

The first change is related to the establishment of a fixed subsidy for energy-intensive industries for the whole of 2023. According to the minister, the government is planning assistance scheme energy-intensive industry combined with government assistance. According to him, enterprises will receive a fixed subsidy of 50 euros per megawatt-hour throughout the year. This applies to steel, cement, aluminium, paper, glass, ceramics and other industries at risk of carbon leakage.

In order to receive a government subsidy, they were not required to enter into fixed rate contracts for more than 12 months and not to enter into bilateral contracts for physical supply with electricity producers. The condition of the subsidy is that the increase in energy costs results in a 40% reduction in operating profit margins or negative operating margins for these activities.

In March, commercial consumers and professionals will not receive subsidies to pay electricity bills. This follows from the statements of Mr. Skrekas.

Subsidies to pay electricity bills for households did not change in March, writes ot.gr. Subsidies for all primary and secondary residences, without income criteria and regardless of provider:

• For monthly consumption up to 500 kWh, the subsidy will be 40 EUR/MWh. This category includes 90% of households in Greece.
• Those who consume more than 500 kWh per month will receive the same subsidy, provided that they reduce their average daily energy consumption by 15% compared to last year.
• For households included in the social household tariff (KOT), the subsidy is 84 EUR/MWh.
• For farmers, the subsidy is 40 EUR/MWh.

The allocated budget for the above subsidies (for households and farmers) is 58.5 million euros. According to statements by the Minister of Environment and Energy,Final electricity prices for residential consumers range from 0.1045 EUR/kWh to 0.208 EUR/kWh. The final prices have not changed since February.
