Police raids on Roma camps in Aspropyrgos and Menidi – six arrests

On Friday, Greek law enforcement agencies carried out operational activities in the camps located in Western Attica. The criminal who committed the murder in Megara has been detained.

The West Attica Police Force on Friday carried out large-scale operations in the Roma camps, in Neoktista in Aspropyrgos and in Menidi after the raids that followed incidents of the last few days.

Equipped (and protected) squads of police searched the houses where the Roma live: in Aspropyrgos, Zefiri, Menidi and Ano Liosia, for weapons and drugs.

Eight houses were searched during the operation, with 15 people taken to the station and 6 people arrested for occasional drug and building code violations and theft.

As part of the investigation, the police are also looking for people who may be involved in shooting incidents between Roma and police in recent days.

Recall, as the Athens News previously wrote, the minor left the gas station without paying 20 euros for fuel. The policemen who were at the gas station, in violation of instructions, opened fire on the thief’s car, seriously injuring a teenager.

Arrest for murder

Regarding the incident in the village of Vlichos in Megara, in a Roma camp, a 36-year-old man was arrested late on Thursday for the murder of his fellow tribesman, a 28-year-old man. The perpetrator and the victim are gypsies.

Two men were in the camp in the same company and, being intoxicated, quarreled, one of them pulled out a gun and shot the 28-year-old man in the chest. The unfortunate man with a mortal wound was taken to the Megaron Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Factory fire

The arson was reported by the owner of a plastic products factory in Aspropyrgos, where a fire broke out on Friday morning. As a result, the enterprise located on Nato Avenue was completely destroyed. “This is clearly arson. The attackers broke the fence in a neighboring building and entered the factory to set it on fire,” the owner of the enterprise, who suffered colossal damage, told ERT.

When asked if he guessed who it could be, the man replied that “they are gypsies” who protested and hooliganized, damaging property in the days after a 16-year-old Roma was wounded by a policeman in Thessaloniki.

Residents of the area were asked to “close their windows” as toxic smoke was coming from the factory. “A fire broke out in an open warehouse with synthetic materials. Fumes hazardous to health are emitted. Close the doors and windows tightly,” the 112 service said in a message sent about the fire that broke out in Aspropyrgos on Friday morning.
