Eva Kylie: a night in custody and bags of money

Events in the case of corruption of European officials, in which Eva Kaili, MP from Greece and Vice-President of the European Parliament, are implicated, are developing rapidly.

According to Le Soir, Kylie spent the night in the detention center. On Friday, people were arrested accused of possible bribery by Qatar to advance their interests in Europe. One of the defendants is Eva Kylie’s partner Francesco Giorgi. A search was conducted in the house of the Greek MEP, during which bags of cash were found and confiscated – the exact amount was not reported, writes CNN Greece.

Kylie’s office is sealed off, authorities are investigating her cell phones and computers. Even her father, writes the Belgian press, was summoned for interrogation, as they found a suitcase with money on him.

According to the Athens News Agency, the newly appointed General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), Luca Vincentini, who was the head of the European Trade Union Confederation (MΚΟ) for 11 years, was also arrested. The fifth person arrested is Nicolò Figa Talamanca, director of the NGO No Peace Without Justice.

According to media reports, the wife and daughter of Italian ex-Member of the European Parliament Pier Antonio Pancheri, the founder of Fighting Impunity, an NGO investigated by the Belgian police, which has been fighting human rights violations since 2019, were arrested yesterday in Bergamo, Italy. 600,000 euros were found in Mr. Pankeri’s house in Brussels, reports Soir.

It became known that the Belgian authorities raided the homes and offices of associates of two Belgian MEPs, Marie Alain, ex-Minister of Belgium, and Mark Tarabella, who are members of the socialist group of the European Parliament. The authorities confiscated computers and sealed the offices of their assistants.

The federal prosecutor’s office said in a statement that the Belgian authorities’ investigation is centered on the actions of Qatar, which is suspected of “influencing the financial and political decisions of the European Parliament by paying significant sums of money or offering significant gifts.”

Belgian media are reporting money bags found at Kylie’s house and a briefcase containing money found at her father’s house. He is also interrogated. According to Le Soir, Eva Kaili and the rest of those arrested will be heard by a competent judge within 48 hours, who will decide on their future fate. The publication quotes the words of Eva Kaili in the European Parliament, which at the same time even referred to the International Labor Organization (Διεθνή Οργανισμό Εργασίας, ILO), but without mentioning the hundreds of deaths of workers according to the ILO:

“Qatar is a pioneer in the field of labor rights. They dedicated themselves to the vision of their choice and opened themselves to the world. However, some here urge us to discriminate against them. They intimidate them, accuse of corruption everyone who talks to them or is associated with them. However, they still receive their natural gas. Again, there are companies out there making billions.”
