Municipal Theater of Piraeus: part of the stage collapsed during a rehearsal, three children were injured

The accident happened on Monday 28 November at the Municipal Theater of Piraeus during a rehearsal of music school students – part of the stage collapsed, causing panic among the children.

According to OPAN President Iosif Vourakis, the producer changed the props of the stage without warning, without informing either the management or theatrical technicians. The resulting stage collapse resulted in minor injuries to three children, who were taken to the hospital as a precaution. As Mr. Vourakis noted, the responsibility for the incident will be assigned to the producer, while he apologized to both parents and students.

The statement says the following: “During the rehearsal of today’s musical show “My beloved Smyrna – From Smyrna to Piraeus” by OPAN and Piraeus Exemplary Music Center in cooperation with the Piraeus Music School, technical problems occurred, as a result of which the concert was postponed. Unfortunately, the wrong initiative – without informing the theater management – about the transfer of the performance to the ITP and interference on the stage of the theater (staging an additional performance) led to an accident, fortunately without serious injuries. Regardless of whether the injuries are superficial, I wish the children well and I want to assure everyone of this, especially their parents, who at that moment were in the theater.

Sincerely, I. Vourakis, President of OPAN”.

The incident was also confirmed by Antonis Benetos, President of the Panhellenic Union of Parents of Musicians and Artists, who said in a statement: “Part of the stage of the Piraeus Municipal Theater fell and the students of the Piraeus Music School were injured. In particular, this morning, during a rehearsal of the students of the Piraeus Music School, part of the stage collapsed and “swallowed” the students, which led to injuries and the destruction of musical instruments. We hope that there were no serious injuries, and we will inform you about the news.”

According to information, at the time of the accident there was a panic, the children fell into the orchestra pit. Three students had scratches and bruises and were taken to diagnostic centers, and one student who felt chest pain was taken to the Naval Hospital for further examination. According to the same information, about 170 students participated in the rehearsals.

The event at the Municipal Theater of Piraeus was scheduled for today at 20:00 and was postponed due to an accident. It is called “My beloved Smyrna – from Smyrna to Piraeus” and is a joint organization of OPAN with the Exemplary Music Center of Piraeus and the Music School of Piraeus. It was a tribute to the song Smyrna-Rebetiko with the famous composer and orchestra leader “Εστουδιαντίνας” (student) Andreas Katzigianni.
