Theft of car catalysts: does the insurance company compensate for the damage

With catalytic converter thefts on the rise, vehicle owners need to know when they will receive compensation from their insurance company.

The scope of thefts from parked cars in recent months has reached epidemic proportions due to the highly valuable metals contained in catalysts – palladium, rhodium and platinum. This, of course, alarmed the owners of vehicles, since a spare part in an ordinary IX passenger car can cost, together with materials and labor, even more than 500 euros.

So the question drivers have is: “Will my insurance company cover the theft of my car’s catalytic converter?”

Theft compensated by insurance companies, provided that the insurance policy includes the additional benefit “Partial theft”, which is mandatory combined with the insurance “Total theft”.

First of all, it should be noted that the position “Partial theft” reimburses the policyholder for the cost of stolen parts or assemblies firmly attached to the vehicle body and necessary for its movement and operation. These components are, among others, engine, wheels, steering wheel, mirrors, doors, as well as a catalyst, since the latter is a component of the exhaust systemfirmly attached to the vehicle and essential for the proper operation and movement of vehicles.

Also, depending on the company, material damage caused to the car during dismantling or attempting to dismantle car parts (aggregates) may also be compensated. In the event that the owner discovers that from his vehicle had a catalytic converter stolen, he must immediately report the incident to the police and obtain a copy of the accident report. He must also contact the mediator and your insurance company so that the incident can be recorded on the spot and the compensation process can begin.

As the Athenian News wrote earlier, six months ago a criminal group was caught catalyst theft. However, apparently, not everyone was caught, or the “business” is too profitable.
