“I will kill you all,” the policeman shouted, mercilessly beating the nurses

Staff and patients at Lamia General Hospital are in shock after the nurses were attacked late on Thursday by… a police officer.

A 44-year-old officer working at a police station in Attica stepped onto the balcony of the 5th floor of the hospital, where he cursed, threatening gods and demons. When the nurses reprimanded him, he severely beat one nurse and kicked another in the stomach and leg.

Threatened to burn down the hospital

According to the site lamiareport.gr, it all started when one of the patients complained to the nurses on duty that a certain man was on the balcony and was swearing loudly. They immediately ran to see what was happening. When the troublemaker saw the paramedics, he swore at them in vulgar terms and threatened to burn down the hospital.

Embarrassed by the insults, the first nurse advised him to calm down and asked him to tell him what was going on. Before the situation could get out of control, the 44-year-old man asked to change his father’s urinal while continuing to shout obscenities. At the nurse’s recommendation not to scream, he turned around, threw an envelope with documents in her face and threatened to kill them all.

He punched her in the face and started kicking her.

The next step of the brawler was to close the doors of the clinic. This caused dread of what he could do to other patients and caregivers. The nurse immediately opened the door, after which she was subjected to a second, more brutal attack – he hit her in the face, removing her mask and breaking the glasses she was wearing. He then knocked her down and started kicking her wherever he could. Her colleague, who tried to save her, also received two kicks – in the stomach and leg.

By the time the guards and police arrived, the 44-year-old man went out onto the balcony, closing the doors behind him. With great effort, his fellow police officers from the ΔΙΑΣ Rapid Response Team, the Lamia Police Station, and the Security Subdivision managed to immobilize him and bring him to the headquarters.

Arrest for bodily harm

The man was arrested on charges of bodily harm, insult and disturbing the peace in a public place. The injured nurses were taken to the emergency department for examination, and one even had to be sent to the traumatology department due to beatings. According to their colleagues’ initial assessments, they are physically relatively healthy, but the shock they experienced was very strong. At the request of relatives, the policeman will undergo a psychiatric examination, and the union of medical workers is going to file a complaint. A preliminary investigation was conducted by the Lamia police station.

What the administration of Lamia General Hospital says:

“Legal actions have been initiated against the responsible person…”. A press release about the “disgusting” – as he characterizes it – episode directed against the medical staff, was issued by the head physician of the Lamia hospital, Andreas Kolokitas. It states that it naturally condemns such actions and states that all necessary legal procedures have been initiated:

“Due to the heinous incident that took place on the evening of August 11, 2022 at the clinic of Lamia General Hospital, the administration from the first moment and constantly supports both the two working nurses and the rest of the hospital staff. There is no doubt that they performed flawlessly and continue to perform its responsibility to serve all patients attending Lamia General Hospital It goes without saying that such incidents of violence are reprehensible and should not be allowed to diminish the high quality of medical services offered by our hospital The administration once again declares its zero tolerance for any cases of violence and harassment against the staff of the Lamia General Hospital and has already initiated legal action against the perpetrators in accordance with applicable law.”

Ministry of Health: Minister Pleuris contact with two nurses

Following the violent incident, Health Minister Thanos Pleuris contacted two nurses in Lamia. The Minister told them that he would fully support them in the legal process and that all necessary steps would be taken.

PS Despite the emotions that the beating of nurses causes, and which we unequivocally condemn, the situation with the policeman is not entirely clear. Apparently, his father, who was in the department on this floor, was left without medical care, or he was not served by nurses (he did not change the urinal). Perhaps because of this, he felt very unwell, or, which is also possible, there were other reasons. It is no secret that in many hospitals in Greece, patients or their relatives pay extra for caregivers. Maybe the cop thought he didn’t need to pay…
