1,200 Coronavirus Protected Buses on the Streets of Athens

Hundreds of city buses in Athens are being fitted with antimicrobial surfaces and special air filters to prevent the spread of the virus.

The Road Transport Corporation (OSY SA) has launched a series of measures to protect against the coronavirus, announcing two tenders for the installation of special anti-microbial equipment on Athens city buses.

The budget of the first one is 1,026,720 euros (plus VAT) and concerns the installation-investment of antimicrobial copper sheets, in particular sheets, transparent films and heat shrink tubing, with a copper content of at least 98%.

Antimicrobial materials will be installed on the touch surfaces of 1,200 of the company’s city buses. carandmotor.gr.

Antimicrobial copper sheets (at least 0.035 mm thick) neutralize several of the strongest types of pathogenic bacteria and viruses, in particular the SARS-COV-2 virus – COVID-19. The microbial load on copper surfaces is reduced to more than 99%, as is the risk of transmission of contamination through touch.

Places for installation of antimicrobial products on vehicles are:

  • doorknobs,
  • seat handles,
  • vertical and horizontal handrails.

The second tender for the amount of 297,600 euros (plus VAT) concerns the provision of installation services antimicrobial air filters with copper ions in vehicle air conditioners OSY, not less than 6 mm thick and 60 gr/sq.m. They will be installed in the air conditioners of 1,200 city buses.

The effectiveness of antimicrobial air filters is confirmed by certificates, and neutralizes several of the strongest types of pathogenic bacteria and viruses, in particular the SARS-COV-2 virus – COVID-19, by more than 99%.

The microbial load is significantly reduced on the surface of antimicrobial copper ion air conditioner air filters to:

  • more than 99% against SARS-COV-2 viruses – COVID-19, H1N1,
  • more than 88% against microbes Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumonia & Pseudomonas aeruginosa, etc.

It is noted that the goal of OSY is to reduce the level of risk of infection in public transport, which has been proven to be one of the main foci of the spread of the virus. The total value of the tenders exceeds 1.3 million euros.

Deadlines for submission of bids: 07/26/2022 for antimicrobial surfaces and 08/29/2022 for air conditioners.
