Kikilias: "Athens prepares for 1 million visitors this week"

The Guardian quoted Vassilis Kikilias as saying: “The whole world is voting for Greece.” The Minister of Tourism of Greece notes with satisfaction:

“Even with the war in Europe, the pandemic that is still with us, the energy crisis, global uncertainty, inflation, tensions with Turkey, tourists still come.”

The Guardian article reports that “Athens prepares for 1 million visitors this week”. The Greek islands are enjoying a record influx of tourists, many world celebrities choose Greece as their holiday destination, reports cnn.gr.

The British publication publishes an extensive statement by the Greek Minister of Tourism and reports that the numbers already strongly show that this year the tourist season in Greece will surpass the historical record set in 2019: 33.1 million visitors, which is 3 times the country’s total population. Quoting economist Nikos Vettas, the Guardian reports:

“However, the Greeks know they are in for a harsh winter. Inflation this month hit 11.5% this month, the highest level in 28 years, according to Eurostat. Although Greece is now growing faster than many other countries in Europe, thanks in part to tourism, the energy crisis and the war in Ukraine are huge threats that cannot be ignored.”
