In 12 months, the construction of the metro in Piraeus will be completed

The connection of the largest port of the country with the international airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” with three new metro stations was announced by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Kostas Achilleas Karamanlis.

The functioning of the metro in Piraeus will reduce the number of land vehicles by 20,000 units.

In particular, Mr. Kostas Ah. Karamanlis, speaking on a program on the SKAI channel, emphasized: “We built three stations in Piraeus in 2021: Agia Varvara, Korydallos and Nikia. And the construction work on the other three currently under construction: Maniatika, Piraeus and the Municipal Theater (Μανιάτικα, Πειραια, Δημοτικό Θέατρο) will be handed over in the very near future. This means that we will connect the main port with the largest airport in the country with an underground high-speed line.” And also added: “We will see the Piraeus metro station even before the elections, which will take place in twelve months.”

Convenient communication with the center, airport, beach

The extension of the metro to the city center completes the plans of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport to cover Piraeus with metro and trams. Now the large port will be conveniently connected by subway to the center of Athens and to the airport (journey time is about an hour).

In addition, the tram line will connect Piraeus with the coastal area of the city, the future park in Faliro, as well as Elliniko, Glyfada and the beaches of Voula.

Three stations currently under construction will be put into operation in the very near future: Maniatika, Piraeus and Municipal Theater (Μανιάτικα, Πειραια, Δημοτικό Θέατρο). With the commissioning of the first three stations of the expansion of the metro network “Agia Varvara”, “Korydallos” and “Nikia”, in July last year, about 63,000 additional passengers began to use this type of urban public transport daily.

CO2 emissions have also been reduced by around 68 tons per day and, on the other hand, the number of cars driving around the city daily has decreased by 11,100.

The stations Maniatika, Piraeus and Municipal Theatre, which will be in operation in the summer of 2022, will increase the number of passengers by 50,000. In doing so, daily CO2 emissions will be reduced by about 52 tons, with a corresponding reduction of about 8,800 cars, moving around the city every day.
