Accident during the rapid ascent of the submarine "Pipinos" Greek Navy

The incident, the cause of which is being investigated, occurred during the rapid ascent of the submarine Type-214 PIPINOS a few days ago in the Aegean Sea.

The rapid ascent caused several injuries to the submarine’s crew. The information says that at some point the submarine raised its nose 52 degrees to the horizon.

What went wrong is checked by specialists, first of all, finding out if something did not work properly when pumping out of ballast tanks. The probability of human error is excluded, on the contrary, a calm attitude to the problem minimized the consequences of an emergency ascent.

PIPINOS is one of the most modern submarines in service with the Greek Navy. Submarines that give a significant operational advantage to the Greek fleet and the ED in general in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.

The crew of PIPINOS, in addition to their operational activities, was awarded for other activities. These are awards for environmental actions undertaken and implemented in 2021 within the framework of the “Friend of the Environment” institution.

The PIPINOS submarine, in parallel with the successful completion of its main mission, has succeeded in individual environmental, energy, economic, educational and communication criteria, as follows from the final assessment.

EXTERNAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BOATS

MAXIMUM LENGTH: 65.30 m
MAXIMUM WIDTH: 6.3 m
HEIGHT: 13 m

SURFACE DISPLACEMENT: 1688 tons

DISPLACEMENT IN SWIMMING: 1858 tons MAXIMUM ON THE 10th.

The movement is carried out by a diesel plant, while supplemented by an air-independent propulsion system (AIP) using hydrogen fuel cell elements of the type Siemens with polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM). Model 214 is an export model, similar to model 212, their main difference is the steel of the submarine hull: transmagnetic steel is used in model 212, and not in 214, transmagnetic steel 212 makes it invisible to magnetic detectors.

The Greek class Papanicolaou U214 is equipped with a radar whose mast does not pass through the hull of the submarine. The radar transmitter is mounted on top of the mast. This transceiver is part of the SPHINX radar system supplied by Thales Defense Deutschland GmbH from Kiel. The heart of the radar is the FMCW transceiver, which is not detected by conventional ESM systems under normal conditions. This technology is called “XΠΑ, Low probability of intercept”. The transmission power is lower than that of a simple mobile phone, but the detection accuracy is much higher than high power radar. The Thales SPHINX radar is a conventional radar designed for submarines. Greece ordered four submarines for the price of six and received two more at the agreed time (approximately) and very late. One of them was built in Kiel, and the other three were built in Greek shipyards. The total cost of the submarines is 2,000,000,000 euros.
