Juvenile Crime: Teens Sharing Sexual Content

The younger generation uses the Internet shamelessly, uploading and sharing 18+ content. And only after the crime is established do they understand what they have done, experts noted at a conference held in Thessaloniki.

According to data on juvenile delinquency presented at a symposium in Thessaloniki, teenagers are distributing sexually explicit photographs without realizing what they are doing (or the punishment that follows).

The shameless use of the Internet and especially social networks by teenagers who do not hesitate to send personal photos or messages of sexual content (sexting, as they call it) has been noted participants of the conference on juvenile delinquency, organized by the social service ΧΕΝ Thessaloniki.

Evanthia Evangelou, representative of the Northern Greece Electronic Crimes Prosecution Sub-Directorate, emphasized that in most cases children expose themselves.

Children do not understand that what is posted on the Internet is never deleted.

“Children accept friend requests from strangers and upload their personal information, a practice that their parents themselves follow, perhaps without even realizing that what they upload is not deleted,” she said in a speech on safe browsing.

The officer also supported the installation of applications for parental control over their children’s online behavior and expressed skepticism about the use of artificial intelligence to create fake profiles with “teasing” photos and videos.

Police officer of the Thessaloniki Juvenile Protection Department, psychologist/philologist Dimitris Papadopoulos, mentioned criminal component that a minor’s act may havespecifying that children do not understand the consequences of their actions.

In one of the schools located in the western region of Thessaloniki, a minor filmed two classmates making love(!) and sent the video to all his friends, without even realizing that he was committing a crime related to the storage and distribution of pornographic materials to minors.

“In addition, the child does not know that if he pushes another person at school and a parent sues him, the police will be waiting at the school to take him to the police station,” said a law enforcement official.

Describing the situation in such incidents, he emphasized that children have no idea that what they are doing is bad. And sometimes the police department won’t even admit it.. “But where fingerprints have to be taken, hands get sweaty and the process is drawn out, parents facing neglect of a minor are forced to wait hours for the case to be processed, losing wages, and the minors now have a ‘stained history,’” he said.

Psychologist Eleftheria Aravidou spoke about the pilot program of the Terre des Hommes Hellas organization, which involved parents and guardians of children in contact with the justice system.

“10 parents took part after referrals and work with juvenile corrections services in different cities. We met caring parents who had lost their role and needed support. Our intervention was psychoeducational in nature and aimed to empower parents who were feeling depressed, as well as experiencing shame, anger and despair,” emphasized Ms. Aravido.
