Traveling by car: Top 5 destinations

It is a recognized fact that Greece is known in the summer mainly for its beautiful islands, but it is also true that on the mainland there are real “diamonds”, places that would not hurt to visit.

If you’re looking for something “alternative” this summer, then maybe it’s time to forget about the hassle of buying ferry tickets (which is often a problem) and take a car ride to the most beautiful places where you can relax.

If you are looking for places to go without a car (for example, by intercity bus ΚΤΕΛ), then these five destinations are wonderful places to relax.

Mani

With its pristine natural beauty and medieval architecture, Mani always manages to charm even the most demanding traveler. It is a place with countless sights, from the imposing tower of Mani and the famous Vathia with symbolic towers and ornate Byzantine churches to the Cave of Diros. In general, the choice is huge, and the view of the area is unsurpassed.

As for the beaches, don’t forget to visit Marmari, Kalogria, Limeni, Mesopos and Foneas.

Lefkada

Connected to the mainland of Greece by a modern highway, the island of Lefkada attracts an endless stream of tourists. The Planetware website calls it the “Caribbean of Greece”. The tourist destination is preferred by families with children, couples and organized groups.

Lefkada impresses Greeks and foreigners with its light sand and stunning turquoise waters on its famous beaches: Kathisma, Egremni, Ammoglossa and Porto Katsiki.

At the entrance to the island you will admire the castle of the 14th century, built by the Venetian ruler John Orsini, and walking along the streets of the city, you will see the church buildings of the 17th and 18th centuries decorated with flowers with impressive bell towers.

Kavala

Although the destinations in Northern Greece are charming, Kavala certainly deserves attention, as it is rather unfairly deprived of it in relation to other, more popular holiday destinations.

It is a multicultural place full of neoclassical beautiful shops nestled in the cobbled streets of the old city with impressive mosques that will take you mentally “into the past”. Be sure to climb the local Acropolis for panoramic views of the Aegean Sea.

Galaxidi

One of the closest options for a car holiday, Galaxidi is only 2.5 hours drive from the center of the capital, but more like an island than the aforementioned destinations. The picturesque harbour, narrow cobbled streets, flower gardens and impressive traditional mansions create an image often seen on postcards.

Astros

The small town of Astros is located in the region of Arcadia, which is located in the eastern part of the Peloponnese peninsula, 109 km southwest of Athens. This is one of the most popular holiday destinations among tourists. The city has excellent beach with all amenitiesinteresting historical and cultural sights, picturesque nature, excellent tourist infrastructure and convenient transport interchange.

You can get to Astros from the capital of Greece in 2.5 hours by bus.
