A briefing is expected at 11:30, at which new government measures on coronavirus will be announced, given the spread of the Omicron strain and the onset of the holiday period.
It will be chaired by Government Representative Yannis Oikonomou and Minister of Health Thanos Pleuris. The measures will be announced following the conclusion of the Prime Minister’s teleconference now taking place at the Maximos Palace.
The package of measures to be taken immediately:
Mandatory use of the mask indoors and outdoors. Double mask or KH95 high protection product in public transport and supermarkets. Mandatory express test for all who enter the country by any means on the 2nd and 4th day of arrival. Transfer of all holiday events. Matches without spectators in stadiums.
All municipalities have decided to cancel the festive events, and already last night a wave of cancellations began.
The second package of measures is, rather, recommendations and instructions. This includes telecommuting in the public and private sectors, with teleworkers likely to reach 60%.
Only seating in bars and nightclubs is expected, with reduced opening hours to midnight and fewer shoppers. On the agenda is the mandatory vaccination of the age group 50+.
About schools. Distance learning is not yet expected, all school trips have been canceled. Schools will not reopen later than planned, but the 50 + 1 rule still applies when schools close due to a large number of sick students (more than half).
