Rising inflation "chokes" households in Greece

In November, prices increased by 4.8% compared to the corresponding month of 2020. Energy and basic necessities prices soared.

The wave of inflation is taking on nightmarish proportions: from month to month, literally everything is getting more expensive. According to data from the Greek Statistical Office for November, the consumer price index rose 4.8% compared to the corresponding month of 2020, while a few days ago the European Statistical Office set November inflation at 4.3%.

The data show that during the month, prices for energy, mainly gas and electricity, rose, while prices for basic necessities rose significantly. Compared to November last year, the cost of gas increased by 180.9%, fuel oil – by 45.2%. Prices for fuels and lubricants increased by almost 25%. Lamb and goat meat cost consumers more by 21.3%. Olive oil prices rose 18.5%.

Double headache
The huge wave of price increases has given rise to a double headache for financial staff, as on the one hand they have to deal with wholesale energy prices, which are “corroded” by government subsidies, and on the other hand, the impoverishment of Greek households, since salaries not only remain low, but also constantly devalued by inflation.

And all this is happening at a time when there is a huge tax storm, with the simultaneous payment of ENFIA, income tax, registration fees, bank payments and fixed payments on debts to the tax office and funds. Finance staff fears a flurry of new bad debts in the next period as citizens will have to decide each month which bill or tax they should leave unpaid.

Wholesale electricity prices have stabilized at € 220-230 / MWh, and finance staff understands that the € 39 discount on household bills is unlikely to help much.

A new “weapon” is expected to be deployed in January to combat the spike in electricity prices. This is a permanent intervention mechanism that will work automatically when wholesale electricity prices are set.

It is noted that the € 39 / month subsidy on electricity bills announced by the government covered November and December, resulting in a new (higher) subsidy required for the first months of 2022. According to the plan, the subsidy will affect all consumers and suppliers of energy.

Ερχεται ο μόνιμος μηχανισμός

Με τις χονδρικές τιμές στο ρεύμα να έχουν σταθεροποιηθεί στο επίπεδο των 220-230 ευρώ / MWh, το οικονομικό επιτελείο γνωρίζει πως έχει ήδη «ψαλιδιστεί» σημαντικά η έκπτωση των 39 ευρώ που έχει ανακοινώσει για την αναχαίτιση της ακρίβειας στους λογαριασμούς νοικοκυριών και μικρομεσαίων επιχειρήσεων.
