New Household Assistance Measures and Income Criteria Electricity Bill Subsidies

Finance Minister Christos Staikuras has announced a package of combined measures that will help households and businesses cope with widespread price increases in the next period.

In particular, new measures are coming to assist households and the distribution of subsidies to electricity bills, taking into account the criteria of income. The Ministry of Finance, together with the Ministry of Energy, are planning activities for the near future to provide additional support to the population and business. However, Mr. Staikuras, in an interview with SKAI TV channel, admitted that the invoices received by the citizens (issued) prove that the increase was not fully paid.

At the moment, there are many proposals on how to deal with the phenomenon of rising energy prices until the relevant ministries have reached a final decision. The data shows that next year there will be no horizontal measures, like those that have been implemented so far, regarding electricity bills.

The most likely scenario is the adoption of income and ownership criteria, which will determine the amount of the grant for each account. At the same time, a different mechanism will be introduced in the new year, with the help of which an attempt will be made to automatically level the rise in prices as soon as the next increase in wholesale prices is recorded.

The basis of the criteria will be the model applied to the social tariff, with more expanded criteria for income and property.

At the moment, the social tariff includes:

Family with one person with an income limit of 9000 euros. A family consisting of two adult family members or a single parent household with one minor family member, with an income limit of 13,500 euros. A family consisting of two adults and one minor family member or a single parent household with two minor family members, with an income limit of 15 750 euros. A family of three adult family members or two adults and two minors, or a single parent household of three minors with an income limit of 18,000 euros. A family of three adults and one minor, or two adults and three minors, or a family with one parent and four minors with an income limit of 24,750 euros. A family of four adults or two adults and four minors, or a family with one parent of five minors with an income limit of € 27,000 For a household that includes a person or persons with a disability by sixty-seven percent (67%) and above the above income limits are increased by 8000 euros. For a family with a person or persons in need of mechanical support using medical devices that are installed in the apartment and are necessary for their livelihood, the above income limits are increased by 15,000 euros. For each additional adult family member, an amount of 4500 euros is added, and for each additional minor – 2250 euros, up to a total limit of 31,500 euros, regardless of the number of family members. …
