Metro line 4 will transform Athens

The construction of a new metro line in Athens has been called “Greece’s largest public project” and begins at a time when the country “turns the page, leaving behind the pandemic,” Kiryakos Mitsotakis stressed, “as we invest in development to create new jobs and improve the quality of life. “.

Line 4 will stretch to Pagrati and Vironas, then connect the districts of Psychiko, Chalandri, Marousi, Pefki, Likovrisi, and then continue westward to Nea Ionia, New Philadelphia and Agios Anargyros, and end in Petrupoli.

It is expected that the project, in addition to creating new jobs, is intended to improve the state of the environment.

The first section of Line 4, Veikos-Lesopark Goudi, was designed to serve many of the densely populated areas of central Athens. Four new stations will be built in the city center (Exarchia, Akadimia, Kolonaki, Evagelismos). The metro line will help relieve the existing central metro stations, and will also provide connections to many important sites and institutions such as hospitals, educational institutions, etc. (Πανεπιστήμιο / Ακαδημία, Ευαγγελισμός).

After the metro is put into operation, traffic is expected to decrease, as about 53,000 vehicles per day will restrict their movement. The new line will reduce the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by 318 tons. As part of the construction program, landscaping works are envisaged that will beautify Athens.

Reportedly, residents will have to wait at least eight years for the metro to open.
