Priest condemns “garbage donation” to earthquake victims in Crete

An archimandrite from Heraklio in Crete condemned the donation of “garbage” to the victims of the Arkalohori earthquake on September 27th.

Achimandrite Agatagellos Yiannakaris wrote on his social media account that donations from people from different parts of the country included “dirty linen, ruined sheets, wedding dresses and even carnival costumes.”

Donations that parishioners brought to the church included tons of rags and useless clothes, carnival costumes, frayed blankets, old stockings and dirty underwear, torn sheets and thousands of damaged shoes.

“Helping is respecting, not emptying warehouses and wardrobes. That’s what the trash cans are for, ”he wrote and added photos of the wedding dress and cosmonaut costume to illustrate some of the inappropriate items that were sent to his church.

One commenter under the post noted that even 12cm heels were sent to earthquake victims.

“Hundreds of volunteers are trying to sort out clothes when they might be doing something else. Please do not send rags and rubbish, ”emphasized in his post the rector of the Metropolitanate of Arkalohori, Castelli and Viannos.

The archimandrite gathered a group of more than 200 volunteers to help residents who lost their homes and property in the 5.8 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale.

The activities of Ahimandrite Agatagellos Yannakaris are detailed in his account on facebook.
