Study: Adequate Sleep and Good Nutrition Protect Against COVID-19

The factors that strengthen our immune system and can protect it from Covid-19 have been identified and analyzed by experts in a new study. Sleep and good food are two of the most important variables, as trite as it sounds.

The dream must be … right
First of all, quality sleep is very important. Most adults require 7 to 9 hours of sleep. It is desirable that it be a long sleep, without constant waking up.

There is also evidence of the beneficial effects of siesta, an afternoon rest usually followed by a short nap of 15 to 30 minutes. Minimizing daily stress is an additional (rather difficult) rule.

Stress refers to increased levels of cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. If this happens for a long time, it may well negatively affect our immune response. Also, daily physical activity, at least 30 minutes, is very useful.

What foods strengthen the immune system
There are also certain foods that can play a role in boosting immunity. Consuming plant-based foods such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and olive oil has been shown to reduce the risk of COVID-19 and severe illness and hospitalization.

Citrus fruits such as tangerines and oranges are excellent sources of vitamin C. Another valuable product is yogurt, as it has a positive effect on the gut microbiome and promotes a healthy immune system.

Finally, nuts like walnuts and almonds are excellent sources of vitamin E, which can help repair damaged cells and reduce inflammation.

Of course, the above is not a “panacea”, a booster for our immune system that will prevent COVID-19. Mass participation is required in the vaccination process and compliance with other proposed measures, such as the use of masks and respect for distancing.

However, it is important to know the factors that benefit the body, which we can use in our daily life, especially in the fall and in the cold.
