Research has shown that in recent years, antibiotics have become less and less effective against viruses and infections. And this is due to their consumption increasing significantly.
Currently, researchers from Michigan State University and Harvard Medical School are working together to develop a vaccine that will fight antibiotic-resistant infections. Due to the overuse of antibiotics, pathogens are rapidly developing resistance to antibiotic treatment. According to the World Health Organization, in 2019, from infections resistant to antibiotics died more than a million people worldwide, and there are fears that after a few years, most medications will no longer be effective.
In a new study published in the journal Nature Communications, researchers led by Xuefei Huang, a professor at the Michigan State University Research Foundation, describe the creation of a new vaccine against antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Researchers announced several discoverieswhich will help create a carbohydrate-based vaccine and provide protection against infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and MRSA or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
The preclinical vaccine formula developed by the team has high level of immunity against lethal levels of staph and MRSA (tests were carried out on animals). For this research, Xuefei Huang received the 2024 Michigan State University Technology Achievement Award.
