Greek schools reopen with regular testing of the unvaccinated

Greek schools reopened on Monday amid fears of a new spike in coronavirus infection caused by the Delta strain.

According to government regulations, unvaccinated students will have to take negative self-tests twice a week, and teachers will have to take express tests twice a week. However, both students and teachers are required to wear masks.

Only a small number of students have been injected against Covid-19, while about 20% of teachers remain unvaccinated. According to the authorities, face-to-face classes will switch to distance learning if more than half of the students become infected.

In comments Monday, Education Minister Niki Kerameus said returning to face-to-face classroom instruction was “a top priority.” She called for strict adherence to safety measures, as well as vaccinating students and teachers against the virus.

As we reported previously, The Greek Ministry of Health issued a circular outlining the regulations for the unvaccinated, that is, what requirements will apply to employees in the workplace (private and public sectors), to the staff of catering establishments (cafes, bars, restaurants, snack bars, taverns, nightlife clubs), theaters, cinemas, museums and gyms, as well as schoolchildren and students.

According to the Minister of Health, from 09/13/2021 to 03/31/2022:

1. Unvaccinated workers in the private and public sector are required to:

do 1 laboratory express test per week, carried out exclusively in private diagnostic centers at the expense of an employee, 10 euros / test. This is confirmed by a digital certificate (declaring a negative test result for covid on the gov.gr platform) and must be verified by the employer using the covid free app.

2. Unvaccinated teachers and teachers, as well as workers in the field of tourism, catering, television, cinema, theater workers, actors, dancers, etc. are obliged:

do 2 laboratory express tests per week, which are carried out exclusively in private diagnostic centers at the expense of an employee, 10 euros / test. This is confirmed by a digital certificate (declaring a negative test result for covid on the gov.gr platform) and must be checked using the covid free app or in accordance with the special conditions that will apply to educators.

3. Unvaccinated students must:

do 2 self-tests per week (tests are provided by the state free of charge). The test result must be declared on the self-testing.gov.gr platform.

4. Unvaccinated students are required to:

do 2 laboratory rapid antigen tests per week (PCR), carried out exclusively in private diagnostic centers at the student’s expense 10 euros / test. This is confirmed by a digital certificate (declaring a negative test result for covid on the gov.gr platform) and must be checked by the employer using the covid free app by the university directorate.

Unvaccinated citizens traveling to the mainland and islands by plane, ship, train and bus must:

make 1 laboratory rapid test 48 hours before the trip (applies to adults and minors 12-17 years old). Self-diagnosis of minors from 5 to 12 years old is carried out 48 hours before the trip exclusively in private diagnostic centers at the expense of the traveler – 10 euros / test. The result is registered on the gov.gr platform, and the certificate is presented during boarding the vehicle along with an identity card (passport) using the covid free app.

Note.

Where it is indicated that an employee or citizen must do a test at his own expense and present a certificate of this, certificates (certificates) obtained during free vaccination are NOT ACCEPTED.
